As concerns surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) are rightfully rising, I feel compelled as your pastor to share some thoughts and information which I hope you will find helpful. First, how should we respond to all of this? We cannot afford to over-react OR under-react. I believe our Christian duty is to APPROPRIATELY react. So, what does that look like? In Proverbs 22:3 Solomon writes,
A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.
This week, our Governor sent out a press release prohibiting gatherings of 250 people or more. One of the precautions we are taking is making this Sunday’s weekend service experience ONLINE ONLY. You’ll be able to access this coming Sunday’s message or previous messages here by 10 AM Sunday morning. We’ll be providing more information regarding any next steps early next week.
Other precautions include following CDC recommendations such as…
Practice Good hygiene. Let’s keep washing those hands people!
It’s wise to have about 2-3 weeks’ worth of products (the ones you can’t live without) NOTE: You do NOT NEED a year’s worth of toilet paper!
As fear rises it’s important that we as Christians respond with love. John writes… perfect love expels all fear (1 John 4:18) and Paul writes… For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:7)
The Apostle Paul also adds that love is patient and kind. Love is not rude and doesn’t demand its own way. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
So, what does love require of me? Well that’s situational for sure. But if I could share a couple of ideas.
Pray with and for others when appropriate. Your neighbors, leaders, our scientists and healthcare professionals to name a few.
Share and model the hope and love of Jesus in your interactions with people. Point them to our online messages where they can find hope and perspective
If you’re healthy, help those who are at higher risk, such as our elderly with pre-existing conditions and those with disabilities. Assist them with their errands and shop for them so they can stay home.
Through it all, as your pastor I pray that you will experience the peace that only comes from God and that you will exercise wisdom and self-control given to you by the Holy Spirit.
Love and blessings,
Pastor Andy
